AQUACULTURE PROJECTS: A THREAT TO OUR WATERS?

AQUACULTURE PROJECTS

The last few aquaculture projects implemented by the Fisherman Investment Trust, Mauritius with the support of the SmartFish programme, funded by the European Union have since then been the talk of the town. Conservationists are quite pessimist about this type of food production. But why?

Aquaculture projects have been implemented in many countries around the world, and this type of fish production is among the most commonly type and fastest growing food producing sector. Aquaculture in the world accounts for almost 50% of fish production.

Along with the positive production of fish, what about the environmental impacts of aquaculture production? Are there negative impacts that have been observed around the world? What actions have been taken against those 'polluting' the ocean? What solutions have been proposed to remediate the negative impacts behind aquaculture production?

Environmental Risk of Marine Aquaculture

In Mauritius, this issue has been debated by many concerned authorities. Inevitably, aquaculture production is a threat to marine conservation, if sustainable and proper management methods are not applied. Marine pollution may also be caused by chemicals or food added to the aquaculture cages.
