The Red Drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) is also know as the Channel Bass, Red Fish, Spottail Bass or simply Reds. This fish is usually identified by a long black spot on the upper part of the tail base. They prefer to live in shallow waters in areas of submerged vegetation and muddy waters.

Red Drum Aquaculture

In Mauritius, the Mahebourg Fish Farm is very famous for the culture of Red Drum in our lagoons. With the use of high technology, improved logistics and skilled work force the production of Red Drum are spawned in world class hatchery, raised in the aquaculture cages at sea and are bred to the required size to meet the demand of the market. However, production of this fish is mainly for export. Future interventions must however be brought to first meet the demand of the local market so that the local population have self sufficiency towards this fish. They in fact many other food companies which direct and focus their production for export just because they make high profits. Why not producing to feed the local population first?

Visits to this Fish Farm are restricted for bio-security reasons. I got the opportunity to visit the processing plants of the company and was really amazed not only by the high tech equipments but also by devotion of the staff there to make sure that the company reach new heights.
