AQUATIC POLLUTION

Types of aquatic pollution

Pollution is the introduction of harmful substances or products into the environment. Aquatic pollution can be from 2 different sources: Point or non point sources.

About water pollution

Aquatic pollution can be from point sources which are easiest to identify and control or from non point sources which are ambiguously identified and are much harder to control.

Death of fish due to aquatic pollution

(i) Examples of point sources - Waste from factories, waste products from sewage system, oil wells, underground coalmines, power plants. These are discharge at specific places and are easy to identify.

Point source of pollution

(ii) Examples of non point source - Storm water drainage, air pollutants, runoff of fertiliser. These are difficult to monitor and can cause serious damage to the aquatic ecosystems.
