ARTIFICIAL REEFS

ARTIFICIAL REEFS SET UP IN MAURITIUS

An artificial reef is a man-made structure that may mimic some of the characteristics of a natural reef.

Sunken ship as artificial reef

In Mauritius, 16 ships have been sunk since 1980 by the Mauritius Marine Conservation Society (MMCS), which have shown remarkable outputs and created several artificial reefs, acting as natural reefs for the marine ecosystem.

Last June 2014, a 16th ship was sunk by MMCS at Flic en Flac, Mauritius. The objective is to create a rich habitat of marine life around.
