Exporting locally produced shrimps to US and Europe
Several investors are eyeing our island for the production of many aquaculture and seafood products owing to our good climate and absence of prevailing diseases like in some other countries. Our locally produced aquatic products have during the last few years become very popular on the international markets.
In line of the further economic advantages, the Albion Fisheries Research Centre (AFRC) will be exporting locally produced shrimps to the US and European markets, where there is a high demand of shrimps and other aquaculture products. The main objective of this recent negotiation between the AFRC and those international markets is to transform Mauritius into a 'parent country' for the production of shrimps (Monodon).

The issue that arise here is why do the local authorities target so much at international markets, when the local population are not self sufficient in many food or food products. It is understood that exports do bring a lot of returns to the economy, but primordially it would be wise enough to ensure that the local population have enough and good access and availability towards those aquaculture products that are exported.
If production of aquaculture products can be increased for export, why not creating a local market for the sale of those products locally first? This would have not only increase the consumption of aquaculture products which have a lot of nutritional benefits, but it could also contribute to have a food secure nation.
