Pearl production in Mauritius
Pearl production can be a thriving business if proper management is ensured to the whole chain of production. The culture of oyster pearl requires much operating maintenance; the biological conditions must be present to allow the pearl oysters to grow well and produce high quality pearls.
The Mauritius Oceanography Institute has been undertaking research work on several aspects of marine living resources for the development of our country's marine sector. These several developments are in fact in line with the strategy of the Government to transform Mauritius into an Ocean State. In line of this, various investigations were taken up on the culture of pearl oyster.

Extracting pearl from oyster
High skilled workers are also needed for several on field works, such as grafting the pearl from the oyster. A suitable farm site for the culture of the pearl oyster is important.
There are several varieties of pearl oysters that are used for pearl culture, of which are the Pinctadamargaritifera (black lip pearl oyster) and Pinctada maculata which are present in the Mauritian waters and can be a potential species to be used in local farms.
