MAURITIUS AGRO INDUSTRY

Vision for a future boost or boom?

Much before the independence of the island, the agricultural sector in Mauritius has long been a traditional growth pillar of the economy. Today, the Agro Industry sector connects small and large farmers, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and large food processing companies across the value food chain.

The Government through its national yearly budget recognises that there is a great potential to further develop the food production and agro processing sector. Say that food security is one of the major policy priorities for Mauritius. Several schemes have in fact been set up to encourage investments in agriculture. We all know that if there is no agriculture, there is no food and if there is no food, there is no life.

So many opportunities do exist. Yet, even today the island is a net food importing country and youth unemployment in this sector is the highest.

Are the youth not given enough support? How far do the existing facilities and services meet the requirements of the population? Are those 'strategic plans' put forward by the authorities reliable enough? Is there a lack of devotion or vision? So many questions that arise from the mind of so many people.
