INTER COASTAL ZONE MANAGEMENT

The ICZM approach

Coastal management

Inter Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) is a dynamic, multidisciplinary and iterative process to promote sustainable development of coastal zones. This approach covers a full cycle of collection, planning, implementation and evaluation of information.

'I' in ICZM also refers to integrated; an integration of objectives between policy makers, Government and other stakeholders. There are in fact 5 types of integration:

  1. Integration among sectors (tourism and fisheries)
  2. Integration between land and water elements
  3. Integration among levels of Government (for decision making and cooperation between themselves at local or regional level)
  4. Integration between nations having common goals
  5. Integration among disciplines (scientific, cultural, traditional or political)

ICZM in Mauritius
In Mauritius, an ICZM Division under the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development was established in 2000 to better develop and maintain the coastal regions and the resources. Following a study by the relevant authorities, an ICZM framework was developed in 2009 which serves as a tool for planning and supporting sustainable management of the coastal resources.

Inter Coastal Zone Management involves a process of recognising the problem to evaluating the collected data (physical, biological and chemical data) through assessment, public consultation and follow ups to ensure sustainability.
